HR Tips for Succession Planning, Part 1 [Video]

Careful succession planning is the secret to maintaining operational continuity when key employees leave the organization. To avoid disruption and make sure you have identified the right candidate for an open position, follow these tips in part one of our two part series:

First, identify key roles and what is expected of the roles. Some roles are operationally essential, meaning they need to be filled quickly after they are vacated. Others may have responsibilities that can be temporarily assumed by others, giving you more time to find the perfect candidate.

Next, match roles to the competencies of your existing employees. While experience and training are certainly important,  you should also take into account the career goals and potential of the employees you may consider for succession.
